Of all the endemic Malagasy chelonians, E. madagascariensis has the oldest age of sexual maturity at 18–25 years old making the species especially susceptible to population decline if
Over the past 2000 years, all of Madagascar's large endemic animals became extinct, and it is estimated that less than 3% of what was once a huge expanse of western deciduous forest exists today.

It is estimated that there are 11,516 described species of native Malagasy vascular plants, of which a staggering 82% are endemic. Among the 1,314 species of native terrestrial and freshwater In Madagascar, the total wealth of known terrestrial is about 5,800 species (and 2,500 pending description), and 86 percent are endemic to the island. Fishes The western Indian Ocean is home to 108 species of sharks, including 11 that are endemic, and 66 species of skates.
Deforestation. Deforestation and forest degradation are among the most significant threats to terrestrial ecosystems in Madagascar. The country's natural forest cover has already been reduced to about 12 percent. The high biodiversity and micro-endemism in the hotspot means that the loss of even a small forest area can lead to extinctions.
Our sample included a range of endemic species from the humid and littoral forests of eastern Madagascar (figure 1; electronic supplementary material, table S1). These forests have decreased in area by up to a third since the 1970s and are severely under threat [ 32 ].
They include Madagascar's most species-rich plant family, the orchids (Orchidaceae), with over 900 species of which 85% are endemic. Palms ( Arecaceae ) have around 200 species in Madagascar (most in the large genus Dypsis ), more than three times as many as in continental Africa; all but five are endemic.

Published 17 Dec 2020, 07:05 GMT. Mouse lemurs such as critically endangered Microcebus berthae are so small they can fit in the palm of your hand. As people have been turning to forests for food and fuel during the pandemic, exacerbating decades of deforestation, Madagascar’s 107 known species of lemurs are at even greater risk.

May 24, 2006. Scientists have developed the first comprehensive theory to explain Madagascar’s rich biodiversity. Madagascar, larger than California and about size the size of Texas or France ZIXHx.
